Welcome to the AdventureStack Directory.
When I started Next Adventure, I was honoring a phrase used in my home when my children were very young, since the day they could speak.
"What's our next adventure today?” was a question I asked them on a daily basis.
I started the AdventureStack Directory to share the adventure-themed writers I was discovering on Substack. I had been keeping track of them on a spreadsheet, but decided to share the list as AdventureStack, hoping it would benefit other readers.
AdventureStack now contains a diverse assortment of Substack newsletters that embody what it means to be an adventurer. Outdoor pursuits, parenting, mental resiliency, extreme sports, and nature investigations are just a sampling of what you'll find in this directory.
Perhaps my interpretation is too broad? I disagree. Venturing involves going somewhere new, undiscovered, or fresh. Some places we revisit seem different because of a broadened perspective or fresh set of eyes.
To venture is to be challenged and experience a risk.
Our desire to explore is a powerful force, documented in factual and fictional accounts. Both Bilbo's journey and Lewis & Clark's quest have a resonance, a pull on our psyche, a relatable desire to discover for ourselves. Having an adventure is how we change, grow, and learn. We put ourselves in these hazardous situations to fulfill a timeless impulse to force change.
Without a quest, we are static, unchallenged, protected, a place where fear thrives. Adventure is the opposite: open to possibility, another's point of view, and experience.
Our journey might involve summiting a remote mountaintop, requiring months of planning and sacrifice. Or it's the emotional challenge of reading a self-help book that redefines a longstanding belief. Each of these experiences requires us to navigate the treacherous terrain of new ideas.
I hope that the AdventureStack Directory will help us on our quests.
What will be our next adventure?
